Novels on CD
Our Number one activity on long car rides is studying. Luckily, my Seven and Five may read by themselves. However, my Four specifically doesn't have patience for extended trips, and he is not ready to read independently. I will read aloud periodically, but it is not something I want to perform for ten hours! That's where books on CD come in. I borrow from the library, save them in my CD holder, and reserve multiple copies of every book so each of those big children can follow along. I Also known to my Best Picture Books for Kids Pinterest board and found that a huge stack of new-to-us publications to take along. (The tough part was keeping my children from reading them until the big trip!
We Are planning a lengthy drive this week. We are hitting the street before sunup and driving until way past bedtime. As a survival plan I have ready a giant set of street excursion activities for children. In Only a brief while our family is going to be taking a road trip. A Road that is quite loooong excursion. As In, start driving at 3 AM and hit our destination after 10 PM. With five children ages 7 and under. And No, we do not have a DVD player in our van. This May sound a little crazy, but badly? Putting all seven of us at a hotel room with a baby still waking every 2 hours sounds a great deal crazier. So I have been working at a creating and collecting an assortment of actions to maintain my team busy for our big adventure.
Lap Boards
Have seen some amazing DIY lapboards on Pinterest. However, I don't sew beyond buttons. I do not do well with wood, foam, or stretching fabric. I don't even cut a straight line. This is my version of a DIY lap board. Find A cheap magnetic skillet (tip -- they're not all magnetic; check first). This 9 x 13 tray price 99 cents. Then get some markers or crayons and hot glue magnet bits on them (even adhesive strips may utilize that extra adhesive). Anything To maintain my toddler from dropping a mark each five seconds. The Sketchpad was from the dollar bin at Target.
Sticker Scenes
This Reusable decal pad out of Melissa and Dog is totally awesome as is. But I wanted to find a way to make it operate in the car. The scenes are too large for laps, and definitely for our little trays. So I chose to cut every scene in half and cut the decals into sections. Then each kid can have part of a scene and a set of decals to perform with. The scenes will not be as striking as they would be with the complete sheets, but you can' t be choosy once you've got seven people jammed into a seven-passenger van.
